Domestic Violence Law in Greece: Legal Framework, Protected Family Members, and Criminal Offences
The Greek Domestic Violence Law governs criminal offences committed against family members and provides special legal protection within the family environment.
For the purposes of the law, the term "family" includes spouses (including individuals who have entered into a civil partnership agreement), parents, relatives by blood or marriage up to the first and second degree, and adopted children.
In addition, where they reside in the same household, family members may also include relatives by blood or marriage up to the fourth degree, persons for whom a family member has been appointed as guardian, judicial supporter, or foster parent, as well as any minor residing within the family unit.
The provisions of the Domestic Violence Law also apply to permanent partners and their children (whether common children or children of one partner), former spouses, former parties to a dissolved civil partnership, and former long-term partners.
Furthermore, both providers and recipients of services within social welfare institutions may, under specific circumstances, be treated as family members for the purposes of the law.
